The Lackawanna Coal Mine tour offers an interactive experience of the local coal mining industry and is one of the top historical sites in Pennsylvania. Part of the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour & Anthracite Coal Museum, the tour takes place inside a former working mine and runs from the beginning of April to the end of November. Visitors start the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour at McDade Park by boarding a mine car and descending a into the Clark coal vein, a former working mine. After various stops throughout the mine, visitors exit through a tunnel and are taken into Dunmore #1 Vein and to the peg shanty to learn more about operations at the mine before continuing into Dunmore #2 Vein. Bring a jacket; temperatures in the mine range around 50 degrees. The Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum is located adjacent to the mine exit for viewing after the tour. The Electric City Trolley Museum is adjacent to Steamtown National Historic Site and is located in downtown Scranton, PA. Among the leading Pennsylvania historical sites, the Electric City Trolley Museum is devoted to exhibiting restored trolleys that once ran on lines throughout Pennsylvania. A major addition was made to the museum in 2006 that created a 2,000-foot railroad track extension to a restoration station adjacent to PNC Field. The tracks connected the line to Steamtown National Historic Site, and initiated a major part of the Electric City Trolley Museum’s mission to put historic train cars back in working order for the appreciation of the public.
